La Liga giants FC Barcelona are in the final stages of extending the contract of Spanish left-back Marcos Alonso

Coming from a football-loving family, Marcos Alonso started his career at the academy of Real Madrid. He graduated from the Madrid academy and played for two years for Real Madrid Castilla.

The left-back failed to get regular minutes for the main team and joined Bolton Wanderers in 2010. Alonso stayed three years with Bolton before joining Serie-A side Fiorentina. He then had a loan spell with the English club Sunderland.

Finally, in 2016, the left-back joined English Premier League giants Chelsea. He played six seasons with the Blues and won both the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Finally, he joined Barcelona on the deadline day of the summer transfer window.

Barcelona to Extend Alonso

After joining Barcelona, Marcos Alonso has proved to be a very versatile player for Xavi’s side. The Spaniard has shown his versatility and played at both full-back and centre-back positions throughout the season.

He has already made 11 appearances for Barcelona and the board seems to be very happy with the defender. Now according to a report from ESPN, the Catalan giants are in advanced talks with the defender for a two-year contract extension.

Alonso recently scored his first goal for the Catalan giants in a 4-2 win over Viktoria Plzen. The defender was then given another start in Barcelona’s last match against US Almeria. He has a decent performance and helped the Catalan giants to keep another clean sheet.

The Spaniard is reportedly happy with his situation at Barcelona and the deal is set to be completed soon. Although he might find it tough to get starts, the defender will surely get enough game time.

Meanwhile, with Gerard Pique’s retirement announcement, Barcelona have started their search for another centre-back. Pique played his final match at Camp Nou, yesterday. The defender will hang his boots when La Liga breaks for the Qatar World Cup 2022.

He has been an inspirational figure for Barcelona over the years. So it will be a very tough job for them to replace him. Inigo Martinez of Athletic club has been recently linked with the Catalan giants for a move in January. But there is still no solid news around it.
