Barcelona create three man shortlist to replace their superstar

Barcelona has realised that there is little they can do to stop their star man from leaving and have thus created a shortlist to replace him in the summer.

With Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp finally spending £75 million on Southampton man Virgil Van Dijk to strengthen their back-four, with the Reds facing serious defensive problems in the first half of their season having conceded the most goals among the top 5 Premier League teams. However, with the Reds buying Van Dijk, they’ve secured one of the top 10 defenders in the world and Barcelona feel that it could mean the end for their star Samuel Umtiti.

Barcelona

The former Lyon star has been in great form for Barcelona and has also created a fantastic partnership with fellow center back Gerard Pique, to bolster Ernesto Valverde’s team. However, while the 24-year-old has been out on the sidelines with an injury, the Camp Nou side have struggled to find a proper partner for Gerard Pique, with only the injury-prone Thomas Vermaelen clicking.

But despite that Umtiti still remains one of the best defenders in the world and for Jose Mourinho, who has main center-back Eric Baily struggling with fitness issues and new signing Victor Lindelof still not settled in the Premier League, is looking for someone who can come in and become the rock at the back for him. According to reports, the Red Devils are more than convinced that they can bring in Umtiti from Barcelona, during the summer transfer window.

However, while there have been conflicting reports that Umtiti wants to sign a brand new deal with the club, the French international still has to agree to a new deal and Barcelona have resigned to the fact that he will leave for Old Trafford. That is why the Catalan giants have created a shortlist, which includes RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, Sevilla’s Clement Lenglet and Schalke’s U-21 star Thilo Kehrer as replacements.

Author’s take:

Barcelona feared that they could lose Samuel Umtiti’s after predicting his value much lower than it actually is. The Catalan giants need to get the Frenchman to sign a new contract or risk losing him to Manchester United. But by the way, things are going it looks like Barcelona have resigned to fact that they will lose the 24-year-old next summer.
