Getafe wide man Marc Cucurella blasted at his former club ahead of Saturday’s La Liga clash at the Camp Nou.
The La Masia graduate spoke of the Blaugrana’s neglect of youth in recent times ahead of the much-anticipated clash. Getafe has been on a roll this season as they prepare to win their fifth La Liga match in a row against Barca. The 21-year-old is hoping to prove a point when he comes up against his parent club at the Camp Nou.
“We have already seen that more than one team have made Barcelona suffer [at the Camp Nou this season],” he said during the pre-match press conference. “I think we are doing well, we are working to find those little ways to create difficulties. We want to get a positive result,” he added.
Cucurella believes Barcelona lacks the kind of patience they used to have with their youngsters.
Cucurella lamented his lack of opportunities at the Catalan Giants ahead of his loan move to Getafe. The Spaniard remarked that Barcelona do not have the same patience as they used to have with their youngsters. “I think that at Barcelona, which is a big club, the important thing is to win in the end. Maybe they don’t have the patience that they had,” Cucurella said.
“As an academy player, which I am, they don’t give you the chances you deserve. I don’t like it because I expected they would be more confident in the academy. In football, the important thing is to win. Winning is more important than having patience. I did not like this because I expected them to have more confidence in their kids,” he added.
Barcelona‘s famed La Masia academy has long been the foundation of the club’s success for many years. The Blaugrana, however, have let youth talents like Xavi Simons and Pablo Moreno leave the club in recent times. Barca even allowed the likes of Jean-Clair Todibo, Carles Perez and Abel Ruiz to leave in January without seeing much of first-team football.
Cucurella has every right to be angry about Barca not giving him enough playing time. His only senior appearance for Barca came against Real Murcia in 2017. Cucurella played just seven minutes in the Copa Del Ray clash against the Segunda Division B side. The U21 Spain international has scored one goal and provided five assists in 29 games for Getafe.
Getafe are likely to exercise their €6 m option to buy the winger but Barca will maintain a stake on any future sale of the player. Speaking of Saturday’s game, Cucurella said, “For sure it will be a special game, I was there many years. To play at a stadium like Camp Nou is special. We’re in good form, it will be a good game.”
