FC Barcelona forward Memphis Depay has refused all the rumours suggesting an intentionally slow recovery from injury.
Dutch international Memphis Depay signed for La Liga giants Barcelona at the start of the 2021/22 season.
The forward had a great start to his Barcelona career. After Lionel Messi’s exit, Depay was Barcelona’s leader up front. But the Dutch forward suffered an injury and was sidelined for a long time. Then when he came back, he had to fight for his place with the new arrival Aubameyang.
Barcelona then had a great summer window and signed Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha to bolster their forward line. Although Aubameyang was sold, Depay found it tough to enter the starting eleven.
Barcelona Forward Slams His Critics
He finally managed to get his first appearance of the season against Cadiz. Then in the next weekend, Depay was given another start when he scored a goal against Elche. At that point it seemed like, he has once again revived his Barcelona career.
But then came the international break. Barcelona suffered a lot of injuries to their main players and Depay was one of them. The forward picked up a hamstring injury which has kept him out from any actions till now.
Now recently a few reports emerged suggesting that Memphis Depay has intentionally slowed down his recovery process in order to not get injured again before the Qatar World Cup 2022. Finally, Depay has come out to address these rumours.
In a statement, the Barcelona forward said, “I’m hearing some disrespectful rumors about me purposely slowing down my injury.”
“The media sharing things so easily without actually knowing the facts which as end result creates a negative narrative. Don’t ever disrespect my professionalism,” the statement further adds.
Barcelona will face Almeria and Osasuna in their next two matches before the World Cup break. It is currently not clear if Memphis Depay will be able to play for Barcelona ahead of the Qatar World Cup. Even his participation in the World Cup is currently in doubt.
Earlier the forward was rumoured to move out of the club throughout the last summer. He was very close to joining Serie-A side Juventus. But the move failed at the final stage and Depay remained in Camp Nou.
Now with the January transfer window coming up, Barcelona might look to offload him once again.
