Manchester United have handed over Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona after pulling out of the race for the Atletico Madrid star.
Atletico Madrid has already consigned to losing Antoine Griezmann and even gave the French international the go-ahead to leave during the summer window. The Frenchman was heavily linked with a move away during the summer transfer window, but then Atletico was hit by a transfer ban which expires in January.
However, while it looked like that the Red Devils are still very, very interested in the 26-year-old striker, especially with Romelu Lukaku misfiring and Zlatan Ibrahimovic getting older, it looks like Barcelona are now the front-runners. With the Camp Nou side more than willing to meet Antoine Griezmann’s €100m buy-out clause, it looked like Mourinho has a challenge on his hands.
But now according to reports from Spanish news outlet Marca, Jose Mourinho has decided to pull out of the race for the 26-year-old forward, which makes it Barcelona’s race to lose. The Catalan giants have been looking at Griezmann as a replacement for Neymar and while the French international has struggled, he’s still star quality.
Antoine Griezmann has scored just five goals and produced a further three assists in 14 La Liga appearances this season and many blame Griezmann for Atletico’s form in the league. Los Rojiblancos sit nine points behind Barcelona and while they have lost only one game in the La Liga after 13 games, they’ve only won ten games with six draws.
Despite his form in the league, Antoine Griezmann would be the perfect addition for Barcelona, given his versatility and attacking prowess. While he does predominantly play as a center-forward, Griezmann can also operate as a number 10 or even as a winger for the club and is far better than Denis Suarez, Gerard Deulofeu and even Paco Alcacer.
Manchester United pulling out of the race means that Barcelona has Antoine Griezmann all to themselves, well to them and Real Madrid, Chelsea and even Bayern Munich. However, the Catalans giants are the front-runners in the race and while Griezmann does want to move to the Camp Nou, Barcelona will have to further convince him of why he should.
