La Liga giants FC Barcelona have reportedly joined the race to rope in Canadian International Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich.

After spending some time in the academy of Edmonton Strikers, Davies joined the youth setup of Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He finished his football education at Vancouver and was soon promoted to the main team.

Within days, Davies cemented his spot in the starting eleven. He became the first player born in the 2000s to play in Major League Soccer. Davies played with great consistency even at a very young age and was rewarded with a national team call-up. In 2017 he became the youngest player ever to represent Canada in international football.

Davies was then signed by Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the summer of 2018 for a fee of $22 million (bonus included). Davies gradually made his way into the Bayern team and won the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award in the 2019-20 season. In the same season, he helped Bayern to win the Sextuple and was regarded as one of the finest fullbacks in the world.

Barcelona joins the race for Alphonso Davies

According to a recent report from Sport, Catalan Giants FC Barcelona intends to sign Canadian left-back Alphonso Davies from Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich.

Now, Barcelona is currently going through a transition phase. They spent a lot of money in the last transfer window. Players like Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, Raphinha, Hector Belletrin, Marcos Alonso, and Frank Kessie joined the Catalan Giants.

The Summer signings have already started to settle down and Xavi’s team have got a great start in La Liga. They have won seven out of their first eight matches. With twenty-two points, Barcelona is currently at the top of the table.

However, Laporta knows that Barcelona still needs more signings to reach their former glory days. This is evident from their performance in Europe. The Blaugrana have only registered four points four in the UEFA Champions League. Hence, Barcelona is looking to sign more players to bolster their squad.

Now, the left-back position in Barcelona currently has three players. Long servant Jordi Alba has gone out of favour. The club wants to offload him because of his high wages. Summer signing Marcos Alonso is 32 and obviously not going to stay for too many years.

Their only long-term option at the left-back position is Alejandro Balde. Rising from the La Masia, the left-back established himself in this ongoing season. But he is still very young. So Barcelona looking at players who can compete with him or is an upgrade over him.

Their interest in Alphonso davies is from a long time. Barcelona earlier had the chance to sign him from the Canadian club. However, they failed to do so.

What’s Next?

Now it looks like they have once again rekindled their interest. However,s signing him will not be easy. Davies has a long contract with Bayern which will end in 2025.

He is currently one of the best left-backs in the world. Their rivals Real Madrid are also monitoring the Candian. Hence a transfer deal for the young left-back will be a very tough job for Barcelona.
