Barcelona linked Chelsea forward Willian is reportedly happy at London and does not plan to switch clubs anytime soon.
The Catalans have been linked with a January move for the Brazilian attacker having missed out on in the summer, according to a report by The Sun. Willian’s current contract expires at the end of the season and several top clubs including Juventus and Barcelona are expected to be on the lookout for the winger spotting a potential bargain. The 31 year old, who is in his seventh season in English football however is willing to commit his future to the West Londoners.
The 31-year-old joined the Blues from Russian side FC Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013. He has gone on to become a regular throughout his time in West London, recently surpassing the 300-appearance mark for Chelsea in their current campaign. The Brazilian has gone on to become an important part of Frank Lampard’s plans, even more so with the departure of Eden Hazard and is planning on staying in Europe beyond the end of the season as he ruled out a return to Brazil in the summer.
The South American forward recently expressed his desire to discuss fresh terms with the Blues but also sparked talk regarding a potential switch elsewhere. The 31 year old, who insisted that there was a ‘market’ for him to remain in Europe, amid interest from some of the top clubs in the continent. Willian refused to completely rule out a move back to Brazil with his old club Corinthians, but he will sign one more big contract in Europe before heading home.
“When you talk about Corinthians, the team that I started out at, I have great affection. But, honestly, I’m not thinking about going back to Brazil now,” Willian said, speaking to Esporte Interativo. “I think I have a lot of wood to burn here in Europe. I have a market. I’m very happy here at Chelsea. Of course my contract is ending now, at the end of the season it’s over. But I’m happy at Chelsea and I plan to stay here,” he added.
Barcelona have been linked with a move for Willian for quite some time now. The Blaugrana were willing to pay as much as £55 m for him in 2018, but the Blues rejected that deal. It was understandable why Chelsea didn’t look to do business for Willian in the summer of 2019 as they had been going through a transfer ban and wouldn’t be able to sign a replacement for him. The Catalans however may decide to make a move for the Brazilian if the opportunity to snap up a free agent presents itself.
Willian is a versatile winger who can play on either of the flanks. He has an impressive right foot, and he has decent pace and dribbling skills. The two time Premier League winner has scored one goal and provided one assist in his five Premier League starts so far this season, scoring another in the Champions League. Barcelona can probably land him for cheap in January if he doesn’t go on to extend his contract from now until the winter transfer window.
