Premier League clubs are reportedly keeping tabs on the Barcelona youngster
Tribal Football reports that Riqui Puig may be available in this summer transfer window. Barcelona is almost out of options and may choose to cash in the on midfielder. And several top clubs across Europe are monitoring him.
Puig has drawn Premier League interest from Arsenal and Tottenham. Besides these, Serie A giants Juventus and Inter Milan may look to bring him in as well.
Ricard Puig, better known as Riqui Puig is one of most immensely talented players in the world right now. He joined Barca’s youth setup in 2013. And after graduating from La Masia, Puig quickly climbed the ladders.
He made his first team debut for the Catalans in 2018. And he was called up frequently by managers Valverde and Setien. Although he was never much of starter, the fans expected him to be one by this season.
That however has not happened. Despite being immensely skilled, his stock has fallen under current manager Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman has barely used him at all. And this has caused widespread dissent among fans who are well aware of the youngster’s capabilities.
The rise of another convincing La Masia graduate Ilaix Moriba, has pushed Puig further down in the pecking order. His figures and stats are pretty unconvincing as well.
Puig has so far played just 477 minutes this season. Koeman has only used him as a starter 3 times this season. And he has scored one goal and registered an assist.
Club President Joan Laporta is reportedly a great fan of the player. However, he trusts the manager and respects his decision to not use Puig in the games. As a result, he has asked for the player to be temporarily offloaded in the form of a loan.
A talent left unrecognized, now up for grabs
It seems that despite his sporadic appearances, Puig has impressed clubs outside of Barcelona. And Tottenham and Arsenal may just be the frontrunners in the race to sign him.
Arsenal’s interest in the Spanish medio is justified. Dani Ceballos is set to join Real Madrid at the end of this season. His parent club is unlikely to let him stay on a permanent basis. The situation is the same with Martin Odegaard as well.
With Mohammed Elneny the only option remaining, the club is desperate to get hold of a solid medio. To that end, Julian Brandt and Riqui Puig have emerged as options. But their London rivals Tottenham will provide some competition.
Things don’t look good at Spurs as Dele Alli and Harry Winks have uncertain futures at the club. And Moussa Sissoko is already over 30. With all that, Spurs have identified Puig alongside OrkunKokcu as viable targets ahead of the summer window.
Now whether the player will accept the move or not is something that matters. Koeman had previously asked him to leave on loan at the beginning of the seaon. However, the player had refused all such offers and preferred to remain loyal to his boyhood club. A true culer, Puig had explained his decision by saying that Barca was his favourite club. And his only dream is to succeed at the club. “My father says that it is cold outside of Barcelona,” said Puig.
However, things are different this time as his development as a footballer may be hampered if he does not receive minutes. And for that, President Laporta might just convince him to leave on loan, until Ronald Koeman leaves Barca. This would be even better for the player as he would make adequate progress. And by the time he returns, he would be at the peak of his powers.
