Morata’s loan spell of 2 years at Juventus came to an end at the beginning of this summer.
The forward was a clear target for Old Lady to sign him on a permanent deal. But that deal did not happen at the end of the transfer window.
After returning to Madrid, a lot of European clubs were interested to get his service. According to Rumours, Barcelona was one of them.
Barcelona News: Striker Crisis at Barcelona
Last summer, Barcelona became a mess and was nowhere near challenging for the top four of the league. Under Koeman, the club lost its identity, and the unrest inside the dressing room grew more.
A Barca without Messi was struggling in front of goal. Griezmann was out of form for a while and new signings Depay and Aguero were injured to add to their struggles.
But suddenly, Aguero was forced to retire from football due to heart problems. After sacking Koeman, Laporta tried to find different forwards to get Barca on track. As new signings, Aubameyang and Torres came in January.
The Catalan giant signed Auba a few hours before the window closes. But Xavi had a different striker on his mind. According to rumours, Barca held talks with their Spanish rival Atletico Madrid to sign one of their fringe players.
Morata at Other Clubs
The former Real Madrid youth became a big young sensation in Spain and played 37 matches in his first stint at Santiago Bernabeu. He also added 10 goals to his name.
Morata was later sold to Italian giant Juventus for a fee of €20 million with a buyback clause. The young Spaniard signed a 5-year contract in Italy. During his 2 years in Italy, the Spain international scored 15 goals in 64 matches.
Madrid bought him back after his bright display at Juve for €30 million. His fiery form continued as he scored 15 goals in 26 matches. In the summer of 2017, Los Blancos sold their Castilla player for £60 million. But the striker was lacking goals in the Premier League.
He was loaned to Atletico in 2019 and scored 18 goals in 49 games, and Simione exercised the buy option of the striker and signed for a £58 million fee.
Morata on Xavi’s Call
But Morata returned to Juve on a two-year deal. There he was linked to Camp Nou in the final 6 months of his loan period. Though it was not clear whether they offered a permanent deal or a loan.
In a recent interview, Morata confirmed that all the rumours were true. He revealed: “There were options to go to Barca”. He told that he spoke with Allegri. Allegri wanted to pair him up with Vlahovic. But in the end, Atletico took the final decision.
The former Real Madrid striker added: “Xavi called me and spoke about football. It’s an honour that a coach like Xavi has you in mind. [He was convincing], even more, when he has someone you have seen play since you were little and seen around Las Rozas.”
