Barcelona News: The club director admits that the club has to consider finances when discussing Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona News: There are a lot of rumours regarding the sale of Frenkie de Jong. Addressing the situation, the club director Mateu Alemany has confirmed that the team is “constrained” by financial fair play laws.

Manchester United has been linked with De Jong, with incoming boss Erik ten Hag apparently hoping for a reunion with the former Ajax midfielder at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old joined Barcelona from Ajax for £65 million in 2019 and has four years left on his deal, but has emerged as a top target for United.

Ten Hag worked with De Jong at Ajax from 2017 to 2019 and is said to have approached his agent, Ali Dursun, about a summer transfer. United is poised to lose midfielders Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, and Nemanja Matic this summer. The club is in serious need of replacements.

The Covid-19 pandemic, as well as Barcelona’s previous overspending, have had a significant impact. The Spanish giants will have to tread carefully in the summer transfer window as they strive to enhance Xavi Hernandez’s team. Alemany has hinted that they may need to trade current players to make room for newcomers.

“We haven’t made any roster decisions; Frenkie is a valuable player.” We are constrained by [financial] fairness, as well as the situation that the club has inherited,” he explained.

“Patience is required. We have made it clear that the team will be strengthened. It’s important, and we want to contend for titles next year.”
