Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has rejected claims that Barcelona’s players did not want the club to sign Antoine Griezmann
Antoinne Griezmann joined Barcelona from rivals Atletico Madrid for a record 120million Euros. The long linked attacker finally succeeded in doing the Blaugrana this summeur. Griezmann had been linked to Barcelona in the past as well, especially after the departure of Neymar Jr. He almost joined the club in 2018.
However, opted to stay at the Spanish Capital for another year in the end. Atletico have denied bids for Griezmann but couldn’t stop their star player from leaving the club this time. However, Griezmann might not have received the best reception from his new team-mates since the arrival claim certain reports.
The circumstances surrounding the move led to reports that adding Griezmann to the side was against the wishes of a number of senior Barcelona players. This includes the likes of Lionel Messi too. The Club legend was in favour of signing old teammate Neymar over the Frenchman.
Many believe that Griezmann’s arrival was one of the reason why Barcelona failed to bring back Neymar to Camp Nou. However, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has rejected any such claims and reports. “The dressing room did not reject us signing Griezmann, The players don’t give their opinions on signings, it is the technical team who decide,” he told Barca TV, as quoted by AS.
Furthermore, Bartomeu admitted that the club were interested in signing Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt. However, lost the talented centre-back to Juventus. “De Ligt was one of our targets, but he decided not to come to Barca,” he added. Despite missing out on the 20-year-old, Bartomeu feels that the current squad is stronger than last season, and he expects the club to be able to compete once more. “This squad is more competitive than last season’s,” he added. “It’s a small squad, but very competitive. Ernesto Valverde accepts the level of demand and I am expecting a lot from this season.”
Griezmann has has a good start to his Barcelona career. He has scored twice and assisted once in 3 La Liga games. With 3 main attackers including Messi, sidelined with injures, Griezmann bore the attacking responsibilities and did not disappoint. With all of Barcelona’s firepower is expected to be back after the International break, the best of Griezmann is yet to be seen.
