Manager Ernesto Valverde inherited a brilliant squad but now in his second season, the Barcelona manager and his president are set to sign a highly rated youngster to replace an ageing star.
Barcelona have had a brilliant squad to rule Europe over the last decade or so, but now it looks like the core of that squad, is ageing. The likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, and many others are all on the wrong side of 30 or closing in. That means that Barcelona needs to start thinking about the future and their future plans for said stars.
Especially the likes of Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique, with the two La Masia graduates crucial to Barcelona’s plans over the last decade, which makes things even harder for the Catalan giants. However, while replacing Lionel Messi will be the hardest thing they will have to do, replacing Gerard Pique, on the other hand, will be a little easier.
The former Manchester United star has been a mainstay in the Barcelona back-line since his arrival and it looks like President Josep Maria Bartomeu, has found a replacement. According to reports from Spanish publication Don Balon, Boca Juniors star Leonardo Balerdi is Bartomeu’s top target this season. The 19-year-old has been in incredible form for his current side and with Valverde looking to sign a new defender, Balerdi is their top choice.
However, Dario AS has revealed that Barcelona has had not one but two bids rejected for the Boca Juniors star. It further adds that a €5 million transfer fee that Barcelona offered has been rejected but it is far off from what the club values the star which is somewhere around €20 million. But with the August 31st transfer window rapidly approaching, it looks like Barcelona have to find a mid-way point if they’re really interested.
Leonardo Balerdi is one for the future, especially given the composure and maturity the 19-year-old has shown playing for Boca Juniors. However, after what Barcelona did to Yerry Mina there is a small chance Balerdi will move right now, especially when he can make his mark at Boca.
