Barcelona is ready to sell star Gerard Deulofeu to make both the money and room for Philippe Coutinho, less than six months after he re-signed for the club.
The 23-year-old joined the club during the summer window as Ernesto Valverde thought he might make up for Neymar’s absence, along with new signing Ousmane Dembele. However, since his return to Camp Nou, the move hasn’t gone well for Gerard Deulofeu and he has barely made 10 appearances in the league.
It now looks like the Spaniard’s career at Barcelona is over for the second time with reports from Marca and Calciomercato that Ernesto Valverde is ready to sell him to make room for Philippe Coutinho during the winter window. According to the Italian outlet, Calciomercato both Inter Milan and Napoli want the fringe star as a backup winger.
With both Serie A sides looking to challenge Juventus for the Scudetto this season, they look at Deulofeu as the perfect player to add depth to their squad. However, while the 23-year-old was once a promising player especially after graduating from La Masia, thanks to the fact that he was naturally gifted with great pace and trickery.
But despite that, consistency has been his main issue and he failed to prove himself at either Everton, while further loan spells with both AC Milan and Sevilla showed signs of improvement but despite that nothing managed to stick for Gerard Deulofeu. But if he moves to either Inter Milan or Napoli, there Gerard Deulofeu could fit perfectly in both manager’s formations, as they prefer to play a formation, with two wingers.
While Deulofeu would struggle to make a starting spot, unless he starts becoming consistent for either Serie A side, the Spanish international would definitely make a good off-the-bench signing, especially with his pace and skill on the ball.
While Barcelona does look to bring in Philippe Coutinho, losing Gerard Deulofeu is not something that the club can or should do right now. Especially with the lack of depth in their squad and given the 23-year-old’s ability to play on either flank, makes him that much more useful.
