The Frenchmen has been a Camp Nou regular since moving from Lyon in the summer of 2016, making 76 appearances for the club. Umtiti has developed into one of the best center-backs in entire Europe since arriving from Lyon in 2016, forming an impressive partnership with Gerard Pique in the heart of the back-line. The 24-year-old is also a key figure in the France National Team.
Sport claims that Barcelona officials have already made contact with Umtiti’s agent in a bid to secure the long-term future of the Frenchmen until 2023 or 2024. Captain Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto have already signed new contracts in recent months and Samuel Umtiti is next in the line to sign a new contract.
Sport claims Catalan Giants want to complete the agreement as soon as possible amid fears that more clubs will be desperate to sign him after the World Cup in 2018. Keeping all this in mind, Barcelona has already opened talks with Umtiti’s representative. Spanish publications also suggest that as a result of United’s €6 million-per-year offer, Barcelona will have to pay him more than what they have originally planned.
Sport also points out that Umtiti is earning very less at the Camp Nou and if Umtiti’s representative and Barcelona officials come to an agreement, the Frenchmen would become one of the best-paid players in Ernesto Valverde’s squad. Sport concluded there report by saying that it’s still “a long way to go” before Umtiti signs a contract extension.
Umtiti will be back in action when Barcelona pays a visit to SD Eibar’s Ipurua Municipal Stadium on Saturday with hopes of continuing their unbeaten run in the league.
The Frenchmen has been one of the pillars on which Ernesto Valverde’s side have gone unbeaten so far in the league. Umtiti is a kind of player who ensures that the team is built on a firm foundation.
The arrival of Umtiti has put an end to all the defensive criticisms Barcelona has faced since Carles Puyol hanged up his boots. Given his phenomenal form this season, Barcelona should renew his contract as soon as possible.
