Lionel Messi was in the headlines all summer because of his tussle with the Barcelona board. The superstar even-handed a transfer request through burofax to reveal his intention of leaving.

We know what happened next. Messi was reportedly linked with Manchester City as he missed Barcelona’s preseason training. His father Jorge got involve and at last, plagued by the board’s inactivity, Messi stayed.

It was of course hard for the Argentinian to stay put after making his mind up for leaving. Messi was frustrated with the way the club was run after a string of poor results. At last, his seventeen years stay at the club resumed.

However, Messi’s contract runs down next summer. Things are looking like he won’t extend it. His recent form added by the club’s positive but not bright return on the pitch may finally cancel his commitment to the club.

Lionel Messi to leave next summer

Lionel Messi already decided to leave Barcelona after the 8-2 embarrassing Champions League exit in the hands of Bayern Munich. The defeat lost all his patience with the club. That is reportedly burning inside him still.

His dispute over the release clause expiration with the board curtailed his move in the summer. The family also became a factor. But when things won’t go right, it tends to follow the same disturbing pattern.

That is the case now. After having a brilliant preseason, Messi started the new La Liga season positively. But he’s been off in the last two games. Barcelona lost 1-0 to Getafe on Saturday despite Messi’s glimpses in the game.

Small things like this are showing that Messi isn’t over compassionate with the things being run under Ronald Koeman. He still in the mood though of finishing presumably his last season on a high.

Koeman hinted at Messi exit

Koeman came out to say he was happy with the 33-year-old staying for this summer but fear it is for 'this season' only.

On Saturday, Koeman came out to say he was happy with the 33-year-old staying for this summer but fear it is for ‘this season’ only. The situation would have been different for him should the talisman left this summer.

Koeman admitted that in his statement, “I was always hoping Messi would stay for this season. If he had left in the summer, I would have had a very different situation at Barca.”

“I went to his house and took the time to listen to all the things he said. But I also explained to him that I had not been a part of the problems he had with the club and told him how I was going to work to change things.”

It is clear now that the club played with one of their greatest players to let him stay for at least a season. Of course, against Messi’s wish. Another part is that Messi won’t be available to renegotiate his contract, figuring the situation now
