The Catalans are keen to sign two new players from Boca Juniors in the ongoing transfer window after their game against Barcelona in Joan Gamper Trophy.
There are not a lot of Argentines who have played for Barcelona. But the list of the players who have played is nothing less than legendary. Javier Mascherano, World Cup winner Diego Maradona and a certain footballing Messiah names Leo Messi. And the Spanish club is now keen to add two more players to that list, by signing two promising youngsters from Boca Junior.
Two Future Superstars at Barca?
According to the reports in Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona is interested in signing Leo Balerdi and Agustín Almendra from the Argentine club. Both the players caught Barca’s attention during the Joan Gamper Trophy. Despite Barcelona winning the game 3-0, both Balerdi and Almendra have managed to get into Catalan board’s good books.
Leo Balerdi is a 19-year old central defender, standing tall at 1.87m. The right-footed defender has already made it to the first team for Boca Junior after impressing everyone in the reserves team. Reports from TyC suggest that Barcelona has already made a bid of €10m for Balerdi.
But it is 18-year old Agustin Almendra who has caught everyone’s attention, after being compared to legendary Argentine midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme. Almendra even played 26 minutes against Barcelona in his natural role of a central midfielder. He has been a part of Boca’s first team since last season.
Both the players were a part of recently concluded U-20 Football Tournament. Argentina U-20 team won the tournament by beating Russia 2-1 in the final. The team was led by Agustin Almendra with Balerdi also being a starter for the Albiceleste.
The pair will join Barcelona’s B team if they sign for the Catalans, which currently plays in Segunda División B.
It is difficult to comment on both the players right now as I have hardly seen them play so far. But anyone who comes at Barcelona’s reserve team will always have a chance of making it big. After all La Masia is famous for a reason. Let us see how these two perform in the Catalan capital.
