Barcelona Transfer News: The Ligue 1 giants Olympique de Marseille are said to be interested in signing Memphis Depay from Barcelona this summer
Barcelona Transfer News: Romain Canuti, a French journalist, said on Twitter that Ligue 1 club Olympique de Marseille is thinking about making a move to sign Memphis Depay, a forward for Barcelona and the Netherlands.
Depay joined Barcelona only last summer after his contract with Olympique Lyon ended and he became a free agent.
The 28-year-old Dutchman had a pretty good first season in Catalonia. He played 37 games in all competitions and scored 13 goals and set up two others.
Barcelona Transfer News: Memphis Depay to leave?
After Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined the team, Memphis Depay played less in the second half of the season.
Barcelona wants to sign Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha during the current transfer window. They could also sign Ousmane Dembele to a new contract.
In that case, Depay would fall further down the list of players at Camp Nou. And since his contract is up in the summer of 2023, Barcelona is willing to sell him for around €20 million. Tottenham has already asked about the Dutchman.
Now, Marseille is also trying to sign Depay and bring him back to France. Romain Canuti said that the president of the Ligue 1 club, Pablo Longoria, will “do everything to set up a nice modern deal” with Barcelona so that the 28-year-old Dutch international can join them.
Marseille had a good 2021/22 season. They finished second in Ligue 1 and earned a spot in the Champions League for the next season.
To keep going up, the French giants want to improve their team’s quality and depth. Depay is starting to look like a good option for them.
What’s next for Memphis Depay?
To do this, Longoria wants to cut Marseille’s wage bill so that the team can make room for new players like Depay.
But the big question is whether they can meet the former Manchester United striker’s salary demands. Clubs like Tottenham, which can afford to pay his full salary, are also interested in signing him.
On the other hand, Depay has said he wants to stay in Barcelona. But because the Catalans are likely to have too many attackers, he could leave to find more regular game time. He might think about going back to France, but that is still to be seen.
