With the midweek round of fixtures on in various places in Europe as part of the festive scheduling, transfer news has been at a premium, but there are some updates emanating out of Camp Nou, and we take a look at them…
#1 Barcelona bring in Valencia star on loan
Barcelona have finally been able to lay their hands on a defender, having sealed a loan deal for Valencia defender Jeison Murillo for the rest of the season, the club announced late on Thursday. The deal makes all kinds of sense given that Barca have been looking for defensive reinforcements after injuries to Samuel Umtiti and Thomas Vermaelen. The club also have the option of making the move permanent for €25m (£22.6m), so the deal makes even more sense if he does turn out to be a success.
Murillo himself has been under an injury cloud over the past 12 months, and has started just 16 games in the league, including a sole league appearance for this season back in September. But at 26, the Colombian still has time on his side to to become a regular starter for La Blaugrana, given he can remain healthy. He will officially be presented as a Barca player on Thursday, December 27.
It has also been reported that the main reason the Catalans have moved for Murillo is that they have not been able to much make headway in a move for Ajax’s Matthjis de Ligt during the January transfer window. With the defensive crisis they are going through, it is vital that Barca finds enough replacements for their starting defensive pair, either for the long-term or as a stopgap, until they can get hold of a top tier player. Whether Murillo can fall in the latter category, only time will tell.
