Barcelona are in talks with Messi for his recent contract renewal
Barcelona stalwart Leo Messi is contracted to the club until 2021, but new terms are not yet finalized. The club’s sporting director Eric Abidal has confirmed negotiations are active regarding tying the Argentine to an indefinite contract. It seems the club is not willing to take any risk. Abidal, his former teammate, acknowledged the contract renewal talks to Mundo Deportivo in a recent press conference.
Messi rose from the ranks of La Masia which he joined in 2001 making his senior debut for the Blaugrana in 2004. Since then, the little magician has won a club-record 34 trophies including 10 La Ligas, 4 Champions League, and 6 Copa Del Rey. Barcelona is trying to rope the 6-time Balon d’Or for the rest of his playing days. But talks have just emerged and his fate after spending nearly two decades at the club is nearing an end.
Abidal has now offered the club’s supporters hope with an announcement. The deal will be announced likely at the end of the season. The Frenchman mentioned why the player himself and his environment are crucial. Rumors have surfaced amid links with David Beckham’s Inter Miami. The Sporting director confirmed getting La Masia wonder kid Ansu Fati to pen a new deal is another of his chief concerns. Abidal also talked about the club’s concern about silverware.
Why should Barca hurry for Messi’s contract renewal?
Previously, Messi had decided to dedicate his rest of the years past 2021. But recent talks have held with Josep Bartomeu. It surfaced that the captain wants to have the option to terminate the deal every summer. Andres Iniesta had such similar clauses in his contract. The club president terms the contract to be negotiated as ‘indefinite’. Abidal also confirmed about academy product Fati’s contract extension After he put on some impressive performances in his breakthrough campaign, he’s too likely to seal a deal anytime soon.
On Messi’s contract renewal Ebidal quote, “Abidal did not want to detail how long the proposal would be. “It will be known when it will be known, but I am positive”. The board looks affirmative over closing down the deal. Messi is serving the Catalunya side for the 16th successive season now. It will be shocking to see him depart.
