The young winger has been linked to an exit, the club’s manager is keen to keep one of his young stars, who will still be forced to fight for his place.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed his desire to tie down one of his City stars to a new contract, the ace is understood to be stalling over a new deal.
One of City’s greatest strike force in 2017/18, Sane’s most recent campaign has been a confusing one, to say the least, and one which has now led to him being linked with a stunning summer move to Bayern Munich.
Sane found himself on the fringes of City’s team at times this season, with Guardiola often preferring Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva in the wide positions. The Germany international has still amassed 46 appearances across all competitions, scoring 16 goals and providing 10 league assists.
The lure of Bayern Munich for any German player is likely to turn their head though, similarly to that of Juventus being interested in an Italian player. Die Roten’s interest, however, stems from a need rather than a want.
Despite being German Champions and one game from cup double, the way the Bavarian rolled over against Liverpool in the Champions League had all the hallmarks of a side in desperate need of youth and pace.
Guardiola, though, has refuted the suggestion he is open to selling Sane, confirming that City are well on track with attempting to secure the winger down to a new deal.
Here’s what Pep had to say about the German International:
“We are one-and-a-half years trying to sign his [new] contract. We want him,” Guardiola told a news conference.
“If you want to extend his contract, it’s because you want him. You’re not going to extend his contract because you don’t want him.
“About the transfer window, the hypothetical incomings and outgoings, it’s not the time. It’s after the game and after the game, I’m on holiday.
“He’s competing with Sterling and Bernardo Silva. It’s not easy. If you want to play in for competitions for the quadruple we need Leroy, Sterling, Riyad [Mahrez], Bernardo, we can’t compete for the quadruple with just two wingers.
Having signed Sane from Schalke in 2016 for £37m on a contract lasting until 2021, it would take an incredible offer to lure him away from the Etihad. He arrived in England in 2016 and Bayern had been linked with a move for the Germany international back then.
But with Ribery, Robben, Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman on their ranks then, they passed up a chance to sign him. Now, with Ribery and Robben gone, it almost looks certain that Bayern will go hard for Sane.
To sell a player with the potential of Sane at 23 would defy everything that City are looking to build, which is an established force able to compete for major honors both domestically and in Europe.
So, City should do whatever it takes to keep Sane at the Etihad Stadium for the foreseeable future, at just 23 years of age the potential level that Sane could reach in the future is truly frightening.
