BCCI Announces player contracts for 2016-17

Pujara, Vijay and Jadeja promoted, Raina out

The Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) announced its list of contracted players today for the period starting October 2016. The Committee of Administrators(CoA) promoted three Indian stalwarts, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja to Grade A contracts. The annual retainer amounts for all contract categories were doubled and the match fees for all 3 formats were also substantially hiked.

Earlier the retainer amounts for Grade A, B and C were Rs.1 crore, Rs.50 lakh and Rs.25 lakh respectively. They have been hiked to the Rs.2 crore, Rs.1 crore and Rs.50 lakh. For matches that take place 1st October 2016 onward, match fees have been set as Rs.15 lakh per test match, Rs.6 lakh per ODI and Rs.3 lakh per T20i.

The contract list for 2015-16 had 4 players in Grade A, Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane. Joining them are the new entrants Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja, who have been rewarded for their performances in whites. Vijay and Pujara have been promoted from Grade B and Jadeja from Grade C. The former two have been consistent over the home season and Jadeja has seen a significant improvement in form since the previous year, maturing into India’s newest match-winner. That makes it 7 Grade A contracted players for 2016-17.

9 players have been awarded Category B contracts, with 5 of them retained and 4 new entrants. Wriddhiman Saha and KL Rahul have been promoted from Grade C while veteran Yuvraj Singh and young speed-gun Jasprit Bumrah are the new entrants. Suresh Raina who earlier held a Grade B contract has been dropped from the list of contracted players while Shikhar Dhawan has been demoted to Grade C on the back of his poor form. Ambati Rayadu has also been demoted to Grade C.

A total of 16 players make up the lowest rung of contracted players, Grade C. Notable inclusions include upcoming players like Karun Nair, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Jayant Yadav and seniors like Ashish Nehra. Harbhajan Singh, Stuart Binny and Karn Sharma have been dropped.
