BCCI is in talks to give A+ contract for KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the next season

It is not that easy to don the Indian outfit nowadays. Players need to come up with a proven track record. They need to perform well in the domestic and IPL in order to earn a ticket to the Indian cricket team.

Even if that’s the case, players don’t get to play for Team India that easily. How often have we seen players warming the bench and waiting for a long time to get an opportunity to play for the country?

The 30-year-old Suryakumar Yadav is the best example. The right-handed batsman literally waited for a long time to play for Team India. Eventually, his dream was fulfilled in the wake of his blistering performance in the IPL 2020 season for Mumbai Indians.

Even if you earn a place in the Indian team, the first thing one must do is to cement or secure their spot in the team. Putting up consistent performances every now and then might do the trick.

Based on the performances and work rate of the players, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have already categorized the players and put them in different contracts.

Earlier, only three Indian players belonged to the A+ category. They are none other than Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. However, it seems there will be two more players who will be joining A+ category.

According to a report from PTI, the BCCI is in talks to give an A+ contract for KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the upcoming season. If that’s the case, then they will earn a higher salary than ever before.

For the unversed, the BCCI has four categories namely A+, A, B and C. A+ is considered an elite category as one earns INR 7 crores annually. On the other hand, players who belong to the A category earns INR 5 crores.

Players who belong to the B category earn Rs 3 crore annually while the players from the C category earns Rs 1 crore respectively. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are future captaincy materials.

This is precisely the reason why BCCI is planning to push them into the A+ category. “Obviously, Rohit, Kohli and Bumrah being the three indispensable players across formats would be in A plus category beyond doubt.”

“But now Rahul and Pant are slowly establishing themselves as all-format regulars, so it needs to be seen whether the duo gets promotion or not,” a senior BCCI source told news agency PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“The central contract is a performance indicator of where you stand as per your performance during the last season. If the BCCI and head coach (Rahul) Dravid decide to honour the duo and keep them in group A, then it’s a different issue but under normal circumstances, they ideally won’t feature in group A,” the source added.
