Ben Chilwell said playing in the World Cup had always been his dream after Chelsea confirmed the left-back is expected to miss the latest edition of the quadrennial event.
Chilwell sustained an injury during Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb in their final Champions League 22/23 group stage match earlier this week. The 25-year-old pulled up with a hamstring problem in the injury time of their win over the Croatian outfit.
Chilwell was then helped off the pitch by two of Chelsea’s medical staff. He underwent scan on his hamstring on Friday to assess the extent of the injury. And Chelsea confirmed earlier today that results of the scan revealed Chilwell has sustained a significant injury.
The Stamford Bridge outfit confirmed Chilwell is expected to miss the upcoming World Cup, which kicks-off on November 20th.
Ben Chilwell sends message after Chelsea confirm player expected to miss World Cup

Chilwell took to Twitter after it was confirmed he is expected to miss the World Cup. “Following my ACL injury I worked so hard to make sure I was ready for the World Cup. It has always been a dream of mine. Unfortunately, this won’t be possible following my scan results,” Chilwell tweeted.
“I’ll do all I can to get back playing for Chelsea ASAP. Thanks for the messages of support.”
Chilwell’s injury is a blow for England, who are expected to announce their squad for World Cup on November 10th.
Chilwell’s injury also adds to Chelsea’s injury list, who already have Reece James, Wesley Fofana and N’Golo Kante currently sidelined with injuries.
James suffered a knee injury during Chelsea’s 2-0 win over AC Milan at San Siro in a Champions League group stage fixture. He has not featured for Chelsea since and is a doubt for World Cup.
However, James is hopeful of recovering in time for World Cup and making it to the England squad.
Kante, meanwhile, will miss the World Cup with the Frenchman out for four months. The 31-year-old injured his hamstring during Chelsea’s second Premier League match of the season, against Tottenham Hotspur. The midfielder has not featured for Chelsea since.
Meanwhile, Fofana sustained a knee injury during Chelsea’s 3-0 win over AC Milan at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League. He is also likely to miss the World Cup but is expected to return to action after the break.
