The transfer saga between Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona continue as the tug of war between the two sides took a rather dramatic turn on Thursday.
The Bundesliga club rejected the Camp Nou’s side opening offer for starlet Ousmane Dembele and then suspended the France international after he failed to report for training. In a statement, Dortmund has said that the 20-year-old is unlikely to move to another club unless they receive a much higher offer, despite reports suggesting that the Ousmane Dembele is already on the verge of signing for Barcelona.
A statement from the club confirmed that Barcelona has made an offer – understood to be €100m, has been rejected by Borussia Dortmund. “There has been a discussion with Barcelona in regards to a possible transfer of Ousmane Dembélé,” read club’s official statement, which was released to the German stock exchange.
“In these talks, Barcelona has presented an offer that does not match the extraordinary footballing and otherwise status of the player and also not the current market situation. BVB have turned this offer down.
And as there is no other offer from Barcelona a transfer should not be expected and is at this moment in time unlikely.”
However, in a press conference on Thursday, new coach Peter Bosz, revealed that Ousmane Dembele was absent from training without telling the club. “Dembele wasn’t at training today. I have no idea why he wasn’t there. We tried to reach him but couldn’t.” The club statement released later cleared the air as to why Dembele was missing and read “It is understood Ousmane Dembele went to Paris on Thursday evening to visit friends and family and was awaiting news as the clubs continue to negotiate the fee.”
“Ousmane Dembélé missed training without notifying the club and has clearly taken this action consciously. We will obviously sanction him for this,” Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc said. “We have also suspended the player until after the cup game at the weekend.”
With Barcelona failing to win over Jurgen Klopp after a £90 million bid for Philippe Coutinho failed with the Liverpool boss reiterating on Thursday that the Brazilian man is not for sale. So it remains to see, as Dembele who has four years left on his contract, will leave or will Barcelona move on to other targets.
Talks between both clubs have been on for the last several days, with Dortmund insisting that they will not accept any offer less than €150 million for the player signed last summer from Rennes for just €15 million. Reports from French newspaper L’Equipe has claimed, that Dembele will fly to Barcelona in the coming days to sign a long-term contract, after agreeing to personal terms with the club.
