Branislav Ivanovic off to Zenit St. Petersburg ?

The reports from London suggest that Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic is in talks over a move to Zenit St. Petersburg.

Daily Mail reports that Ivanovic could be heading to Russia over the weekend if talks are completed. The 32 year old has struggled to get into the first team at Chelsea this season. With just few months left in his contract, the Serbian captain looks to leave Chelsea on a free transfer.

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2008, Ivanovic has played over 370 games for Chelsea and has been highly influential. Ivanovic is one such player who is well regarded by Chelsea fans and also the club owner Roman Abramovich. He has won all the available trophies at Chelsea over his 10 year spell and is now set to leave the club for more opportunities.

The reports suggest that Zenit are keen to sign Ivanovic on a three-and-a-half-year deal. In addition to the Russian club, some Premier League clubs namely Everton, Leicester City and West Ham have also shown interest. But Zenit are confident they can secure his signature before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Antonio Conte’s 3-5-2 system has definitely benefited the team, but Ivanovic has found himself in the bench in most part of the season. Chelsea’s back three of Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta have been performing very well this season. This has clearly affected Ivanovic’s opportunities at Chelsea, and has only started 6 games under Conte.

The two time Premier League champion has been an integral part of Chelsea’s success in the last decade. But even without the likes of Ivanovic and JohnTerry, Chelsea are playing very well under Antonio Conte’s new system. It is very much clear that Ivanovic is no longer an indispensable player at Chelsea.

With the likes of youngsters, Kurt Zouma and Nathan Ake in the team, it will be very difficult for Ivanovic to compete for a place. He has six months left in his contract with Chelsea. Therefore Chelsea will look to cash-in on him this month itself. Otherwise they will lose Ivanovic on a free transfer at the end of this season, as Zenit are ready with a contract for Ivanovic.
