While the young superstar said he would stay at his current club this summer, he has left the door ajar for FC Barcelona, stating he wanted to play for FC Barcelona.
Defending La Liga Champions FC Barcelona have had an eventful summer transfer window this time. The Catalan club bolstered their midfield with numerous new additions to the squad and looks to retain the La Liga title this season, while they also aim to reclaim the UEFA Champions League.
Throughout this summer, they have been linked with a move for Ajax’s young superstar Frenkie de Jong, but a deal fell through. The young, 21-year-old has been on a stunning form for Ajax in the recent years. His performance has dazzled one and all as he has already attracted interests from numerous club, however, Barcelona is considered as his next destination.
After helping Ajax qualify to the UEFA Champions League group round, the young sensation made it clear that he wanted to play for the Catalan club some day. However, it also clarified rumours that he would join FC Barcelona this summer, stating this would not be that season he would play FC Barcelona. He said, “I wanted to play at Barça and maybe one day I will do it, but this season will not be that season.”
“I will stay at Ajax this year and I think it will be a fun year.” added the player ending speculations over his future. This 21-year-old player is versatile and can play on a multitude of positions, including as a Centre-Back or as a Defensive Midfielder, to play a box-to-box role, or as a Central Midfielder, who commands the play.
Reports across Europe also suggest that Ajax want 50 million Euros for their star player. It is reported that FC Barcelona would make a move for this Dutch player next summer and lure away his services to the Now Camp. At the moment, his complete focus will be on helping the Dutch side, Ajax perform decently this season. As they have qualified for the Champions League group stages, Frenkie also has opportunities to impress other clubs as well.
