Can Manchester City extend Pep Guardiola’s contract?

Manchester City appointed Spanish gaffer Pep Guardiola in the summer of 2016. And since then he has guided the club to be one of the best in the world.

In his first season with the club, Guardiola failed to win a major trophy. However, in the next season, he won a domestic double with City while accumulating 100 points in the English Premier League (the first time in their history).

The following season Guardiola’s Manchester City defended the EPL title and the League Cup successfully. On top of that, they added the FA Cup which resulted in a domestic treble. City’s form dropped in the 2019/20 season as they failed to defend their Premier League title.

But then Guardiola’s team lifted the next two EPLs and restored their dominance. Overall, Guardiola has won 4 English Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup, 4 EFL Cup, and 2 FA Community Shield. The only major trophy which has eluded him in his City career so far is the UEFA Champions League title.

Can Manchester City extend Pep Guardiola’s contract?

Pep Guardiola’s current contract with Manchester City will come to an end within 9 months. City are yet offer an extension deal to the Spanish manager and if they don’t do that quickly the 51-year-old might leave Etihad at the end of the season.

In an ideal world, City Should have already given an extension to their manager and announced his extension by the world cup.

This is the seventh season for Guardiola in Manchester. Guardiola has never spent this much time with any previous clubs ( 4 with Barcelona, 3 with Bayern Munich). Earlier Guardiola expressed his desire to manage a National team. So generally questions were raised if he will continue in City beyond 2023.

Manchester City meanwhile have every intention to hold their iconic manager. And according to reports, they will probably speak with Guardiola during the FIFA World Cup to renew his contract. This will ensure Guardiola and City squad focus on retaining the English Premier League and winning the elusive Champions League trophy.

But if it goes beyond the end of this year (2022), this can create a problematic situation for City management and Guardiola.

Finally, if Guardiola decides to not renew, City will have to search for new managers. There are already a few leading candidates for the roles. According to ESPN, City likes Bayern manager Julian Naglesmann, Patrick Viera from Palace and their ex-captain Vincent Company.

However, for now, they will be trying their best to keep their Spanish gaffer who made them one of the best in the world.
