Can Mumbai City Finally Lift the Title?

The new ISL season is already well underway, and fans can’t stop asking for the big question – who will be the champion this year? Last year’s champions ATK (now merged with Mohun Bagan and known as ATK Mogun Bagan) is definitely among the favorites, but there’s another club on top of the standings and finally looking like a real contender – Mumbai FC.

After the City Football Group acquisition ahead of the current season, Mumbai City FC finally looks to be on the road to a title. The club has never won it so far, having coming close (semi-finals) twice so far. However, efforts made by the management have been branded a failure so far, until the CFG acquisition whose quick thinking made Mumbai City FC the team to beat this season.

Two Top Signings

As soon as City Football Group (owners of Manchester City) have added Mumbai as the 8th team under its umbrella, it was clear that the Islanders will be a tour de force. The team moved quickly to secure the services of two excellent strikes – Adam le Fondre and constantly ISL top scorer threat Bartholomew Ogbeche.

After a rocky start to the season, Sergio Lobera’s team looks pretty solid. If experts are to be believed, Mumbai City is well on the course for a title which will be the first in the team’s history. That shouldn’t be a big surprise. City Football Group is an ambitious holding company that transformed Manchester City to a champ. The company also has clubs in other continents which are doing pretty well too.

Mumbai City is the latest addition to that roster, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The team was aching for a title in the past ISL seasons. Fans have been waiting for such a moment for a long time and thanks to le Fondre, it may very well deliver.

The former Reading FC legend is already enjoying life in India after the team signed him on loan from Sydney FC before the season began. le Fondre duly delivered on the high expectations, striking 6 times in 10 appearance so far. He obviously has the backing of Lobera who has pipped him ahead of Ogbeche, Kerala Blasters’ top strikes from last year.

Le Fondre says that he’s got total confidence that Mumbai can go all the way this season. While the jury’s still out on that and it may be too early to predict, the team is doing great. It’s currently sitting atop the table with le Fondre among the top scorers. If everyone performs like the English striker and with full confidence, Mumbai City FC can finally deliver on a long-lost promise – a title for the fans.

Experience as Motivation

le Fondre’s experience so far includes leading Reading FC to a Championship win and promotion to the Premier League. His portfolio also includes an A-League championship with Sydney FC. At 34 years old, he has all the experience he needs and the hunt for silverware is what drives him to success.

Hunting for silverware motivates the English forward. To put it in his own words, that’s why he’s still playing. That kind of winning mentality is precisely what the club needs if it’s to deliver a title. The 34-year old is impressed with the ISL so far, citing a lot of scope and potential for the league to improve in the coming years.

He’s also writing his own story trying to deliver the first title to a city that deserves it. Mumbai City FC is finally on the right track, and fans are eager to see if the team is capable to go all the way this year.
