Can The Win Over Manchester City Turn Things Around For Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United Side?

Manchester United’s season so far has been quote abysmal as per their own standards, they’re sitting below Everton on the League and suffered a defeat against Feyenoord in Europa League. Their season started off quite well as United won their first three matches and it looked as if Mourinho’s arrival could finally turn the tide in favour of United for the first time since Sir Alex’s retirement. But, then happened the clash with Mourinho’s old foe and United fiercest rivals Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and a 2-1 loss to City derailed their season completely.

They lost 3 matches in a row and their play was shambolic, it looked as if the things have gone back to where Louis Van Gaal and Moyes left and no progress has been made yet.

Come October after the international break United have had a tough run of games and apart from their thrashing by Chelsea they did quite well. But, their league position is still very much mid table and being six points off from the top, United will have to buck up if they want to challenge for the title or at least put up a fight.

The League Cup clash against City had a lot of importance to it, not just because of the rivalry between the two managers and the clubs but also because of the current forms of both the clubs and having points to prove for both the managers who are under the scrutiny.

Wednesday night’s win over City could be the game changer for United’s season and could give them the boost and the push that was needed to lift the spirits among the club. That win was important for most of the players as they’re struggling with form and questions were arising over their commitment to the club. Also, more than anyone it was important to Jose Mourinho and more importantly after the humiliating defeat against his former club, Chelsea.

Manchester United had a lot of positives to take from the game against City. They were good defensively as City failed to even register a single shot on goal. With both the centre-backs injured Mourinho played Rojo and Blind at the heart of defense.

Also, Carrick’s influence in the United’s midfield was really important and Mourinho should now me considering to make some changes to accommodate the English midfielder in his system.

Among many positives, Zlatan’s drop of form is a major issue. He again wasn’t influential at all against City and gave the ball quite cheaply. Pogba also has not yet been at his usual best and Mourinho needs to settle in with a system and set of players if he really wants to change his and United’s fortune.
