The Indian Premier League franchise cricket team for Kolkata is called Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan, actress Juhi Chawla, and her husband Jay Mehta are the franchise’s owners. At Eden Gardens Stadium, the Knight Riders compete.
The team initially qualified for the IPL playoffs in 2011, and as a result of its affiliation with famous owners, it has grown tremendously popular. By defeating Chennai Super Kings in the IPL final, they won the title in 2012. In 2014, they defeated Kings XI Punjab and accomplished the same feat. Gautam Gambhir is the team’s all-time highest run scorer while Sunil Narine is the top wicket-taker. The team’s motto is Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo Re (we will perform, battle, and prevail!). and purple and gold are the official colors.
The international communications giant Nokia sponsored the Kolkata Knight Riders from the team’s inception and continued to do so till 2014. Gionee, a Chinese smartphone maker, became their main sponsor in 2015 after agreeing to a three-year, 540 million ($6.8 million) deal. With a two-year agreement, Nokia returned as the Knight Riders’ primary sponsor in 2018. Former co-sponsors and partners include Star Plus, Reebok.
MPL took over as its primary sponsor in 2020. They have co-sponsorship agreements in place as of 2021 with Jio, Lux Cozi, Colgate, Pentonic, and Unacademy among others. Additionally, they have agreements with MX Takatak, BKT Tyres, Kingfisher Calendar, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Amul Kool. WinZO Sports, an esports application, and the Kolkata Knight Riders signed a long-term sponsorship agreement in 2022.
