Looking for a change in the squad, Chelsea may get a great buy in the form of this Tottenham superstar
Keeping an eye on the summer transfer window, Chelsea is looking for a change in fortunes. The first step for that is a few changes in the squad. Reports by a Britain daily Mirror suggests that Chelsea will step up their bid to land Tottenham ’s Toby Alderweireld.
Alderweireld has just one year remaining on his contract and has been seriously courted by Chelsea.
Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has strictly said that Alderweireld’s place in Russia will be at stake he does not get more game time. On the other hand, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has clearly said that he will not be pressured into saving the 29-year old’s World Cup dream.
“I have an amazing relationship with Roberto. I understand his comment like all the managers”, Pochettino said “If I am the Belgium manager, England manager or Argentina manager I want all my players to play. But my focus is to manage Tottenham and win games with Tottenham. I cannot be kind to every single manager.
“Toby in the last four months has struggled with his injury. I am not going to change the system because Toby needs games for the World Cup. The interest for me is Tottenham, it’s about Tottenham winning. I understand his international manager but what can I do?”
Despite speculations that Spurs would hesitate to sell the defender to Chelsea, the Blues believe Alderweireld’s expiring contract may give them a chance. Tottenham wants around £55million for the Belgian who joined them in the summer of 2015 – but could have to settle for around £40m. His contract also has a release clause of £25m. Manchester United and Barcelona also have the player under the radar. It’s interesting to what lies in the star defender’s future.
Author’s Take :
Since Alderwiereld’s arrival, the Tottenham have had the best defense in the Premier League. This season theirs is the third-best in the ascend. Despite claims he is not fit for his club, he played 90 minutes for the country during the international break. Players of his stature need to be playing in major events such as the World Cup.
