New Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte has urged his players to perform better in their upcoming matches and have criticized that his side looks only good on paper.
The former Juventus coach had an impressive start to this year’s campaign after winning all of his first three matches in the Premier League with victories over Burnley, Watford and West Ham United.
Chelsea;s star men, Diego Costa and Eden Hazard started the season in brilliant form and were tipped to continue their form throughout the season, but soon their form deteriorated in losses at home to Liverpool and away to Arsenal.
Conte, known for his defensive tactics, couldn’t change Chelsea’s defense as Chelsea leaked at least two goals in each of their last four games across all competitions, including three goals in the London Derby against Arsenal.
The 47-year-old condemned his team’s performance and remarked that the team only looks a good side on paper.
“We are a great team only on paper, not on the pitch,” the Blues manager spoke. “I prefer to be a great team not only on paper but also on the pitch. The pitch is the truth. The pitch speaks.
“The pitch is the most important thing for us: not the words, not on paper. We must work to change this. We must work a lot.
“Last season was a bad season. We must have last season present in our mind to not repeat the mistakes. We must reflect a lot to find very soon the right way.
“We know there are many difficulties. We have not got the balance and now is the moment to consider everything. It is incredible to concede three goals.”
The Stamford Bridge outfit had a poor campaign last term after a victorious Premier League season in 2014-15. Chelsea finished 10th last season and the fans expected more from the London team since a brilliant start under Conte.
However, Chelsea’s defense has crumbled under pressure situations with the absence of skipper John Terry. Even the midfield pair of Nemanja Matic and N’Golo Kante has not performed well when needed. Antonio Conte has a tough challenge to better his side after a string of poor defensive performances.
