Chelsea chase €60 million rated Manchester United target

Chelsea are willing to offer Samuel Umtiti a bumper deal in order to lure him to Stamford Bridge

Samuel Umtiti is attracting a lot of interest from big clubs all over Europe. His performances have been consistently marvellous this season. With his current release clause worth a meagre €60 million, Barcelona is negotiating a new contract with the Frenchman. However, they will have to do a damn good job to convince Umtiti to stay.

Chelsea is among a host of clubs interested in the 25-year-old and is willing to triple his salary as per Spanish publication Don Balon. He currently earns €3 million a year at the Camp Nou and is aware of Chelsea’s interest in him.

Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain have also been known admirers of Umtiti. Jose Mourinho is unconvinced of his current crop of centre-backs while PSG want to add a star defender to their line up. After capturing Neymar, they have put out feelers for Umtiti and will make a move for him in the summer.

Meanwhile, Ernesto Valverde is adamant that the Frenchman will be at Barcelona for years to come. He said, “Umtiti is a great player and we expect to see him at Barca for many more years and for him to enjoy his football with us.”

Regarding the relatively low buyout clause he added, “To an extent, the buyout clause is made high so that you can’t buy the player. But, as times go by, that fee doesn’t seem so high at all. But the player still has to want to leave. We’re very happy with Umtiti and I’m sure he is going to stay here for a very long time.”

Author’s Take

Samuel Umtiti has been a rock at the back for Barcelona. He has been a star performer for them this season and the release clause in his contract is too low for a player of such importance. Barca will try and persuade him to sign a new contract with a much much higher release clause. He remains committed to Barcelona, however, a prospect of moving to Premier League along with a sharp increase in wages might to be too enticing to turn down.
