Reece James has featured in 13 of Blues’ Premier League matches this season.
Chelsea defender Reece James has been urged by former Blues’ defender Frank Sinclair to start playing centre-half because it is going to be difficult to lodge England international and Liverpool star Trent Alexander Arnold out of the right-back position.
Reece James has made 13 appearances for the west Londoners in the Premier League so far this season. He has assisted two goals in the PL and has also kept two clean sheets. The 20-year-old has also played in four of Chelsea’s Champions League games this season and has bagged a goal. The defender has also featured twice in the League Cup – and has scored a goal – and once in the FA Cup for Chelsea this season.
But Alexander Arnold has been even more impressive for Liverpool and England national football team. The 21-year-old has appeared in 25 of Liverpool’s Premier League games so far this season and has scored two goals. The right-back has also kept 9 clean sheets and has given a whopping 10 assists. The young defender has already established his name as one of the best right-backs in the world. The Liverpool defender has also emerged as the first-choice right-back for Gareth Southgate’s England.
Alexander Arnold has been even more impressive
As the stats suggest, Alexander Arnold has really been super impressive for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp’s men are flying high in the Premier League and their defensive department has the best defensive record in the English top-flight.
That might explain why it will indeed be difficult for Reece James, a Chelsea academy product, to break into the England starting XI ahead of Alexander Arnold. Sinclair says Reece James’ adaptability is one thing that would get him into England squads regularly.
“If I was Reece James, I might be clever and try and to start playing centre half or something because Trent Alexander is going to be a hard man to lodge out of that position the way that he’s playing at the moment. But, it’s international and you need world-class players in every position if you want to really seriously challenge at that level,” Frank Sinclair, who played for Chelsea from 1990-1998, told GentingBet.
“So, to have someone like Reece James, who will fight for that second slot as the natural right back, that’s a good thing. You’ve obviously also got [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka at Man United, but I don’t think he’s particularly been in great form this season. The one thing about Reece James that will get him into England squads regularly is his adaptability, he can play centre half, he can play right-back, he can play central midfield,” the defender who has also played for Leicester City opined.
Chelsea sit fourth in the points table
Reece James has played in 5 of 7 games Chelsea have played since the turn of the year. The defender will be hoping to deliver impressive performance for Frank Lampard’s side. Chelsea sits fourth in the points table and trail third-placed Leicester City by eight points. The west Londoners next face Manchester United in the Premier League. They will then face Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur before facing Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
