The Blues are set to enter the race to sign Premier League star Riyad Mahrez alongside La Liga giants FC Barcelona.
Antonio Conte has voiced his displeasure over the transfer limitations several times and if that is any indication, Chelsea will look to sign more players in the ongoing January transfer window. After the signing of Ross Barkley from Everton, the Italian manager has set his eyes upon Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez who is having a good run this season.
The Algeria International has scored 8 goals and set up 7 goals for his teammates so far this season. Despite signing a 4-year contract after Leicester City’s title triumph, Mahrez announced his intention to leave the club after their dismal run in the 2016-17 season.
Several clubs such as Arsenal and AS Roma were rumored to sign the winger in the previous transfer window. After Neymar’s departure, FC Barcelona had also expressed interest in signing the Algerian. The Catalans are still interested in signing Mahrez, but they will have to face off against the Premier League champions if they want to get a hold of him.
Apart from these clubs, Liverpool is looking for Mahrez to fill in the huge void created by Coutinho’s departure to Spain.
Mahrez’s current status at Leicester City
Recently appointed Leicester City manager Claude Puel has asserted that the 26-year-old is happy with the Foxes and has no intention to leave. He said: “I have said I want to keep all my best players in the squad. Riyad is a valuable player to the team. When I discuss things with him he has shown a good attitude, he is enjoying his football. He is a happy player. This is a good thing.
“He likes to play with his team-mates. He has improved all his stats with assists and goals. It is all positive for him. I want to continue this work with all my best players, like Riyad.”
The French manager also claimed that the meeting between the pair was positive and added that Mahrez has not asked for a move out of the King Power Stadium.
With a highly lethal attack consisting of Messi, Suarez, Dembele, and Coutinho, the Catalans really do not need another addition in the form of Mahrez. Chelsea on the other hand, need the services of Mahrez with the departure of Eden Hazard seemingly imminent. Their attacking prowess was not at their best after tame draws against Arsenal and Norwich City.
