According to reports, Frank Lampard has Soumare in his wishlist. Chelsea are keeping an active option if they fail to pull off the Declan Rice deal at the right moment. This will be a cunning piece of business from the board.
Chelsea are glowing with their star signings this summer. Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, and Thiago Silva’s arrival have raised the expectation bar. But the club is still in the hunt for one more significant signing.
West Ham star Rice has reportedly agreed on a five-year contract with the Blues. But the Hammers won’t let him go on cheap. His current valuation stays at £80m. Rice has been a pivotal figure for them.
However, Lille’s Soumare is no less impressive than Rice. Most importantly he will be a lot cheaper than the England international. Chelsea may opt for him as an alternative option or if they lack finances at this moment.
Rice or Soumare?
Reports from The Mail claim that Frank is looking for a young, robust, and talented midfielder. Something they will get plenty in both of their available options. Both, Rice and Soumare, are aged 21.
Soumare is likely to cost considerably less than of Rice. The player once rejected a move to Newcastle United in January even after Lille accepted a £35m offer for him. So, Soumare has an opportunity to try somewhere bigger.
Since he joined as a teenager from PSG in 2017, Boubakary has made 55 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit. He has also represented the French national team at the youth level. Soumare’s contract runs until 2022.
But it is Rice whom Chelsea are approaching at first. Although he has a huge price tag, the player himself is keen to leave West Ham. This is an opening the door for a seventh major signing to be completed in this transfer window
Exit door for Loftus-Cheek?
Havertz’s arrival already put up a question mark on Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s future. Now, ongoing transfer speculations of midfield addition are showing the 24-year-old the exit door.
Loftus-Cheek has shown his brilliance on the pitch both on loan spells and as a senior team contributor. But his continued spells on the sideline due to injuries is making Chelsea eye a substitute in the market.
N’Golo Kante and Kovacic are considered untouchable at the club. Jorginho also has seemingly restored faith from his manager. With the arrival of new faces, Loftus-Cheek will fall down further in the pecking order.
Lampard will also be willing to get him off to create space for either Rice or Soumare to come in. One thing is for certain that the club is concerned about making professional steps rather than emotional ones.
