Former Italian International Massimo Ambrosini has suggested that English Premier League giants Chelsea will have to spend more than the Jack Grealish transfer to secure Rafael Leao from AC Milan.
Rafael Leao joined the academy of Sporting CP at a very early age. The forward then graduated from the Sporting academy and was promoted to the main team.
Leao played only one season for Sporting’s main team before joining French club Lille on a free transfer. He soon cemented his spot in the starting eleven and started to showcase his talent. The Portugese stayed one season in Lille and then joined Serie-A giants AC Milan.
Within a few days, Leao established himself as one of the most important players in the Milan squad. He then helped Milan to win the Serie-A title in his third season with the club. He was then voted as the Serie-A MVP for his exceptional season with Milan.
Chelsea asked to pay more than Grealish transfer for Leao
With his consistent performances, Rafael Leao has become one of the hottest names in the transfer market. It is understood that English Premier League giants Chelsea hold a keen interest in the winger.
Earlier they tried to snatch Leao away from Milan but the deal did not happen. Leao’s contract with AC Milan will come to an end in the summer of 2024. The contract also possesses a release clause worth €150 million.
AC Milan now wants to tie him down on a longer contract and has already started the procedures. Chelsea however still remains interested in the winger and wants to land him in Stamford Bridge.
According to a report from Calciomercato, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly wanted to have a meeting with AC Milan management regarding the transfer of the Portuguese star during the first week of October. Milan however stayed firm in their position and has no intention to lose their biggest asset.
And now one of their former players Massimo Ambrosini has asked them, to not accept any amount which is less than Jack Grealish’s transfer money.
When asked if Leao deserves more than €100 million, the former Italian international told Tuttosport, “I don’t like to talk about this, but if Manchester City paid €117m (£101.8m) for Jack Grealish…”
Leao meanwhile has failed to impress in AC Milan’s last two outings against Chelsea. The winger could not make any impact in the game as Chelsea right-back Reece James clearly marked him out of the game.
Looking at this former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has asked Chelsea to check if their winger ticks all boxes or not. Cole however believes that Leao is very talented and exciting.
Now the transfer battle for the Portuguese will get intense from here on.
