Chelsea are hoping to seal a deal for Karim Benzema in the summer according to recent reports in Spain
Chelsea, after their 3-1 loss to Tottenham, is sure to miss out on Champions League football next season. The 8 point gap seems too big to make up with just 7 games to go. Consequently, club owner Roman Abramovich is looking for a squad overhaul. With the future of manager of Antonio Conte along with several other star players uncertain at the Stamford Bridge, a summer revolution seems imminent.
Don Balon is reporting that Chelsea is interested in Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. He is their primary target and the report even goes on to state that a bid has been made for the 30-year-old. Should he move to the Stamford Bridge, Benzema will be joining his former teammate Alvaro Morata.
Is there a reunion on the cards?
The Spaniard was brought in after Diego Costa fiasco to lead the line for the Blues. After a bright start, however, he has flattered to deceive, scoring just once in the league in 2018. Conte brought in Olivier Giroud in the winter to share the goalscoring burden with the misfiring Morata, Giroud has not been able to make much of an impact, however.
With Real Madrid looking forward to an overhaul of their own, the time seems right for Benzema to experience the rigours of Premier League. He has long been linked with a move to Arsenal but the Gunners are pretty top heavy now, boasting the likes of Aubameyang and Lacazette. Chelsea will have a free run for his signatures should Zidane agree to let go of one of his trusted lieutenants.
Chelsea’s interest in Benzema has come out of nowhere. While the move would benefit Benzema, it does not make sense on Chelsea’s part. They have Morata and Giroud, moreover, Batshuayi will also return from his loan spell at Dortmund. If the reports are true then Chelsea will be making a silly move by buying Benzema.
