Chelsea join race for Man City and Arsenal £40.4M Target

Chelsea is all set to trigger a £40.4M release clause for the highly-rated winger. Arsenal bid is already rejected once.

The Blues have reportedly joined the race to sign the Sporting Lisbon starlet Joelson Fernandes alongside Manchester City and Arsenal. The 17-year-old winger has attracted interest from top Premier League clubs ahead of the new season.

According to A Bola via Sport Witness, Chelsea becomes the third club from Premier League to sign the 17-year-old youngster from Portugal.

Manchester City and Arsenal are the other two clubs from Premier League to show interest in the youngster. Joelson has been impressive on the left wing with his killing pace and cuts. The under-17 international has a release clause of £41m in his contract.

The youngster made his debut last June in the Primiera Liga for the Sporting, which has lured Premier clubs to sign Joelson. The Gunners had their latest bid rejected worth £29M after failing to satisfy their initial bid of £18m. Mikel Arteta’s side is expected to prepare a fresh bid later this week for the talented winger.

Chelsea recently signed Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech for the new season. The Blues are also in chase of Bayern Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz, whose asking price is £90m. The Londoners are now looking to sell the deadwood from Stamford Bridge and land young talents. The progress is phenomenal considering the latest signings from Lampard.

Perfect replacement for Willian?

Chelsea recently lost two of their wingers, Pedro and Willian from their last season squad. Spanish winger Pedro will be continuing his career further in Italy with AS Roma. Frank Lampard is now in looking to replace them with young wingers considering future of the club in mind.

The highly-rated winger started his career with Sporting CP in Portugal and an academy product as well. Joelson featured for under-15,17, and 23 Sporting sides as a winger and impressed with his phenomenal wing-wizardry. Later, the winger was promoted to the senior side to perform under Ruben Amorim.

Joelson made four appearances for the senior side in Liga Nos last season but couldn’t make any impact with less time. However, he featured in 28 games for the under-23 side in Liga Revelacao and found the net five times. Joelson also got two assists to his name from the left flank. Considering Chelsea, who have good attacking strikers and poachers but are lacking pacy wingers.

This youngster can fill this void for Lampard and play a crucial part in the Blues in Premier League. It’s not easy for all to shine in Premier League on their debut season, for instance, Moise Kean was signed from Juventus for around £24m, who was shining at Seria A. But, the Italian couldn’t display the same in Premier League with Everton.

Twelfth Man Opinion

If Chelsea wants to sign the promising winger from Portugal, they would need to activate the £40.4M release clause, which is possible. Manchester City on the other hand is also capable of spending for the winger. Having recently signed Ferran Torres from Valencia, it’s unlikely for them to spend huge on another winger.

As per the reports in England, Lampard’s summer budget is £120m. Former English international wants to build a young side for the future and is working by signing young talents from the top flight.
