Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is unhappy with summer signing Tiemoue Bakayoko’s output so far, stating that he needs to do more to keep his spot in the lineup.
Chelsea spent big money in buying French midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko from AS Monaco in the summer window. However, ex-Chelsea maestro Frank Lampard said that the midfielder needs to offer more to Chelsea as a £40 million investment.
Since his arrival at the Stamford Bridge, the French international has blown hot and cold, with no performance of real substance. His arrival to the club also laid way to the exit of the holding midfielder Nemanja Matic to exit the club, and join title rivals Manchester United.
The decision to buy the midfielder has come under scanner on a regular basis, with Lampard being the latest to criticise the midfielder for his contribution on the pitch. The Bakayoko experiment, according to Lampard, is yet to deliver the results that were expected from the club.
What Lampard had to say:
The Blues icon wrote in a column for the Evening Standard: “Tiemoue Bakayoko will need to raise his game at Chelsea to keep Danny Drinkwater from taking his place on a more regular basis.
“Both players joined in the summer and as yet, Bakayoko has not made enough of an impact in games.
“When you sign for Chelsea, you have to understand that you’re never the only player for a position. There is always someone else knocking on the door.
The biggest problem for the midfielder, according to Lampard is that he is yet to find the right position. It has been difficult to identify if the midfielder is a tough-tackling holding midfielder or a ball-playing creative type.
“Then the attacking players are given a bit of freedom, so he is one of two defensive midfielders given real responsibility to win tackles, keep things tight and move the ball quickly. N’Golo Kante does it out of instinct, but Bakayoko is finding it harder,” concluded Lampard.
Conte’s retort –
However, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte was having none of it. He said that Bakayoko is working hard, and for a young player who is new to the Premier League, fluctuations in performance are the norm.
Conte says Tiemoue Bakayoko is a young player who is working very well, and it is normal at his age that performances can fluctuate.

It has been a difficult start to the season for the defending Champions, who lie in 3rd place, 11 points off champions Chelsea.. Not only have injuries marred their gameplay, but also on the pitch it looks like a one-man attack from the summer signee Alvaro Morata.
For the French midfielder, it has been a difficult season as his role at the club is not clearly specified, as to whether he has to play in the double pivot alongside N’Golo Kante or to play as a creative midfielder. Bakayoko needs to address this problem quickly if he wants to stay at the club next season.
