Recent speculations had suggested that north London giants Arsenal were on the verge of adding yet another signing to their squad. It was stated that Valencia center-back Shkodran Mustafi was on the verge of completing his move to the Emirates, in the upcoming days with Arsene Wenger looking to reinforce his current back-line. The centre-back was linked heavily with a move to Arsenal, after it was also confirmed that Per Mertesacker would be out for a few months with an injury that he picked up recently.
However, as per a recent report by Spanish newspaper AS, former champions of England, Chelsea have now stepped into the race to sign the La Liga defender and have gone one step ahead than their domestic rivals.
The report further adds that the Blues had made an opening offer of €30m for the 24 year old German international, which has now been rejected by the Spanish giants, with the French manager’s side yet to make a bid for their target.
Apart from the two top English clubs, it has been added that Serie A giants AC Milan are having a keen interest on signing the World Cup winner and will want to utilize the services of super-agent Jorge Mendes, in order to push through his move to the San Siro.
Wenger knows that Mertersacker’s recent injury could possibly keep him sidelined until about December, which means that the Londoners will surely have to sign a potential replacement and who better than the former Everton man, it would seem now.
