Chelsea accused of breaching match fixing rules Vs Sunderland

On 22nd May 2017, English newspapers were filled with praise for the recently crowned English Champions Chelsea. They reigned supreme in England after a gruesome 38 game season. They deserve all the plaudits they received and more. But one newspaper told an entirely different story. The headline accused the champions of breaching match fixing rule.

The incident in question is John Terry’s 26th minute substitution at Stamford Bridge. With David Moyes agreeing to this send off for the Blues captain, the question of match fixing does jump in.

The Incident in question

Chelsea faced Sunderland in the final game of the season at Stamford Bridge. This was also John Terry’s last game in front of the Blues’ home support as he is leaving Chelsea this summer. To commemorate his last game at the Bridge, he put forth the idea of being substituted at the 26th minute (26 being his shirt number) to get a standing ovation from the Chelsea faithful. Moyes said that Terry deserved a “great send off” and that’s why he and the Sunderland players greed to the entire arrangement.

As planned, the ball was put out of play on the 26th minute mark by the Sunderland players and Terry was substituted from the pitch. He received a warm round of applause and a standing ovation from his adoring fans. He was also given a guard of honor by his teammates. This led the game to come to a halt for two full minutes.

Possible Actions by the English FA

FA’s policy on match fixing states “Fixing is arranging in advance the result or conduct of a match or competition, or any event within a match or competition.” No official statement has been released either by the Premier League or by the Football Association. Destinies of both the teams had been decided before the weekend’s action. Therefore, no official action is expected against either team as the incident did not compromise the integrity of the competition.
