Chelsea News: Chelsea Missed Out on Freund Transfer

Chelsea News: English Premier League outfit Chelsea have failed to secure the signing of their top candidate for the Sporting Director position, Christoph Freund.

Freund is currently working with Red Bull group-owned Austrian team RB Salzburg.

American businessman Todd Boehly became the owner of Chelsea at the start of the season when Roman Abramovic who was sanctioned by the British Government decided to sell the club. Since then, Boehly started a huge structural change in the Chelsea setup.

The former director Marina Granovskaia exited the club and Chelsea owner Boehly himself became the new sporting director. Boehly then sacked German manager Thomas Tuchel due to many issues and replaced him with English gaffer Graham Potter.

Earlier it was reported that the Blues have reached an agreement on a contract with Christoph Freund. The reports further stated that Chelsea have even told Salzburg about their intention and the Austrian club was looking for possible replacements.

After becoming the owner of Chelsea, Boehly took many tough decisions in these last few months. Chelsea spent over £260 million in the transfer window and signed players like Kalidou Koulibally, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucureilla and Raheem Sterling, to bolster his squad.

He then signed English manager Graham Potter and sacked Thomas Tuchel. However, there was still something left for him to do. Boehly wanted to sign a new Sporting Director for Chelsea who can take over the role and shares the same vision as him and Potter.

The idea is to sign the Sporting Director within this year and give him/her enough time before the January transfer window.

It also came to light that Boehly likes to develop Chelsea in the mould of Red Bull Group and City Group. Thus, Christoph Freund became the leading candidate.

Finally, RB Salzburg announced the extension of Christoph Freund. They confirmed that the 45-year-old Sporting Director will stay with the RB group till 2026.

While speaking about Chelsea’s interest, Freund then told, “As I have already confirmed in interviews, Chelsea was interested in me. When such a big club asks, it not only honours me, but the work of FC Red Bull Salzburg.”

He further explained that RB Salzburg is the best place for him and he will not change clubs.

Meanwhile, former Salzburg boss Adi Hutter termed this failed move as “the biggest transfer in last 50 years”. He further termed this move as “sensational’ and hoped that Freund joins Chelsea.

After their failed attempt of signing Christoph Freund, Chelsea will now look for other candidates. The Blues are desperate to sign a Sporting Director soon.
