Chelsea news: European Champions Chelsea managed to claim a narrow 1-0 win against Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday night. Some heroic goalkeeping from Eduoard Mendy rescued the three points for Chelsea.
The Senegalese international was absolutely splendid and did everything to get the win. From a stop with his face to tipping over an overhead kick- he stood between Brentford scoring.
Thomas Tuchel will be happy with the win but disappointed with the performance. Chelsea dominated possession in the first half but in the last thirty-odd minutes were completely outplayed by Brentford.
English international Ben Chilwell scored the solitary goal of the match via a smashing volley inside the penalty box. This is the third consecutive time he has scored for club and country.
The performance from Chelsea was indeed scrappy but nevertheless an important win. The victory now takes them ahead of Liverpool at 19 points who also registered a win against Watford. Thomas Tuchel now has seven straight away wins in London derbies. No other manager in the top four divisions have ever managed to achieve this.
Chelsea news: Paul Scholes says Chelsea have the ‘weakest defence’ amidst the top 4 teams
Former Manchester United player Paul Scholes in an interview has said that Chelsea have the weakest defence in the top four. He says that Liverpool have the best defence followed by Manchester United and Manchester City.
However he feels Chelsea doesn’t have great centre backs at the moment. Scholes adds that Liverpool have the best centre back pairing currently and Manchester City also have two ‘great ones’ along with his former team Manchester United.
But when it comes to Chelsea, he thinks the defence is ageing with the likes Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta. In his belief Jorginho and N’golo Kante are the ones shielding the defensive line.
“I think [Antonio] Rudiger’s been really good but, other than that, you’ve got Thiago Silva who’s 36 or 37, Andreas Christensen’s a young player… I think in the middle of the pitch you’re alright. Jorginho and [N’Golo] Kante are really good players.
“I’m just not sure that you’ll score enough goals and that you’re defensively good enough.”
Chelsea fan Lewis who was a part of the audience said that he would have to ‘agree to disagree’ on the comment and that Chelsea had the best defenders in the league.
“Really?” Scholes replied. “Well, Liverpool have got the best centre-backs, [Manchester] City have got two great ones, I think United have got two really good ones. Ithink Chelsea are probably the weakest out of the top four defensively.”
