Chelsea has finally agreed on the £26million transfer deal for Rennes Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. After going through the thread of speculations around his future. Both the clubs have reached an agreement after negotiations intensified this week. Chelsea has now close in a five-year contract for the Senegal star this summer.
The Blues didn’t balk a bit and continued their summer spending spree even after spending around £220m on summer transfers. Chelsea has been the most active club in the transfer window and is ready to challenge for the title this season. To date, Chelsea has secured the signing of six players with the deal for Declan Rice from West Ham still in the air.
However, Chelsea has announced the seventh signing of this summer after Rennes accepted their second bid with £22m plus add-ons. Frank Lampard has been monitoring the situation of a 28-year old for a while now.
They offered a £14.2million offer that was turned down by Rennes last month claiming it to be too less. This week, after Chelsea offered a lucrative bid of £18.2million the French side asked to increase the offer with add ons.
In the meantime, Mendy went through the medical test after it was thought the deal is in place. But he was called back after the negotiations failed.
Édouard Mendy would offer more competition to Arrizabalaga
Later the £22m bid was offered along with the add-ons. The Blues was in a desperate need of bringing a new goalkeeper after the club lost the faith in Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Spaniard has lost his place in the squad after displaying a poor thread of performances for Chelsea in the last season.
Even though the club wanted to offload him this summer but Chelsea couldn’t find a suitable buyer for the outcast goalkeeper. Later, Arrizabalaga expressed his willingness to stay at the club and fight for his place for this season.
Chelsea has lost all the hopes after Arrizabalaga conceded a goal in a 3-1 win against Brighton. Thus this urged Chelsea to look for a suitable number 1. Mendy would give more competition between the sticks to Arrizabalaga and would also help him push the limits. Jan Oblak was also on Chelsea’s radar but the offer was something too expensive for Chelsea.
Édouard Mendy was one of the significant squad members who helped the club qualify the Champions League. The member joined Rennes from Reims only during the last summer. This season he would compete with Arrizabalaga for his first-team spot.
The former Chelsea goalkeeper and current clubs technical and performance adviser Petr Cech give Mendy’s recommendation. On Friday, the French side bid a farewell to Mendy who has played 34 games for the club for the 2019/20 campaign.
According to some reports in France, Rennes also asked for players as a part of the deal for Mendy. The club was particularly finding ways to convince Chelsea for Fikayo Tomori. But the defender is on Everton’s radar and might join the club at the end of the transfer window.
Till now, Frank Lampard has only experienced playing Willy Caballero as his second option. The signing of Édouard Mendy has not only increased the options but also it would maintain a healthy competition for the three of them to compete for a regular playtime.
