Chelsea should sign Griezmann : Sky Pundit

SkySports pundit Paul Merson believes that Chelsea should go all out to sign Atletico Madrid superstar Griezmann. The Frenchman’s career has been under a lot of speculation, especially after an apparent interest from Manchester United. The forward finished third in the World Player of the Year Awards, which he is expected to win in the near future. As of now, he has 17 goals in 36 games proving to be a critical cog in Simeone’s scheme of things.

Why Chelsea need him?

Chelsea has almost won the League this year. This means that the London giants will be challenging for multiple trophies next year. After a dismal mid-table finish last season, the club only played in the domestic competitions this season. With the onset of the new season, they will need more players. The likes of Batshuayi haven’t done much this season except for some productive moments. Keeping these factors in mind, it is imperative that Chelsea needs more match winners who can single handedly win them games. They do have players like Kante and Hazard who bring the ball home, but in Griezmann they would be getting hold of potentially the best player in the world.

How does he fit in at Chelsea?

In the current 3-4-3 system, Conte deploys two fast and creative wingers down the flanks. Hazard, Willian, and Pedro often cut in to link up directly with Kante and Matic’s through balls. On the dribbling front, Willian does have an edge over Griezmann. Though, when the overall presence is compared, Griezmann is a better asset to have on the pitch. Having played under Simeone, Griezmann knows his defensive duties, and would always fall back when needed.

Their relationship will play a crucial role in determining the future.

He can also be deployed as a central striker in absence of the hot-headed forward Costa. Costa has consistently missed games due to picking up cards over the seasons. In times like those, Griezmann would give a strong counter attack option which they lack when a comparatively slower Costa plays up-front. Tactically speaking, Chelsea finds the perfect match in Griezmann.

Will the move suit Griezmann?

The striker has recently expressed his reservations about moving to England due to a change in lifestyle. Going by this season’s numbers, it is certain that Atletico are failing to perform at their maximum potential. Though, the player is known to be dedicated to his present club and money won’t lure the player. The only reason he might make a move is to take up more challenges and win more trophies elsewhere. The physical aspect of his game will be tested heavily in the English Premier League. A player of his stature will definitely thrive under any circumstances.

Now it remains to be seen if Chelsea are willing to flex their financial muscle to the extent of competing with the richest club in the world, Manchester United.
