Chelsea defender David Luiz has contacted Spanish club FC Barcelona over a possible transfer in January. According to several reports, the defender was in contact with the club ahead of their crucial La Liga encounter against Real Madrid.
The Brazilian defender has fallen out with the Italian tactician Antonio Conte, losing his place to the young defender Andreas Christensen. Further, the defender has been sidelined with a knee injury more recently.
Several rumors in England suggest that Luiz is linked with a move away from the club, with Real Madrid being one of the prime spots while Arsenal have also shown interest in the 30-year-old Brazilian.
Luiz’s treatment for his knee problem took him to Barcelona and, according to Catalunya Radio, he used the trip to make contact with Barca officials over a transfer.

The report further suggested that the defender was given permission to travel to the Catalan capital by the club for medical treatment. However, the club is unaware of the fact that the defender has utilised this opportunity to hold transfer talks with the club.
Barcelona have been in talks to sign David Luiz after their defender Javier Mascherano had agreed to move away to China in a 10 million move. Further, the Argentinian defender had offered a massive salary to move to Asia.
The club led by Ernesto Valverde have previously tried to sign the defender when he was still at Benfica and during his first spell at Chelsea before he moved to Paris.
Author’s take :
It would be a short-term move for Barcelona, as the Brazilian defender is beyond his prime at 30 years. However, said and done Luiz has been the type of player that Barcelona have missed. The Brazilian would not only compete alongside Gerard Pique for a place in the team but also would be an able replacement for the Catalan defender.
Further, it would be foolish on the part of Barcelona to buy Luiz when they have the option of signing the young-defender Yerri Mina. Yerri Mina is more positioned to replace Pique at the centre-back spot, alongside the defender on loan Marlon Santos.
