It is not every day that a 36 years old player can excite a certain fanbase in the Premier League. However, Thiago Silva is an exception to this. The Brazilian joined Chelsea from PSG on a free transfer this summer. He played his last game for PSG in the Champions League final.
The former AC Milan defender was supposed to be the leader at the back for the Blues. Silva’s presence at the back has really helped Chelsea’s defense. He did not start on a very good note, however, with time he adjusted himself to the Premier League.
Silva’s brings calmness to the Chelsea backline which was missing last season. Lampard has built his defense around him and it has worked very well so far. Not only this he commands a lot of respect in the dressing room, given his achievements in his career.
He can show, the young Chelsea players what it takes to be among the very best in the world. However he was never signed for the long term, he is only a short-term solution. Even at the age of 36, he shows no signs of slowing down.
Contract extension for Silva
Given that he is showing no signs of slowing down, Chelsea wants to capitalize on that. According to TMW, the Blues have already started talks about a contract extension for him. The Brazilian signed a one year contract when he arrived.
Frank Lampard seems to be very happy with the way the former PSG defender has played so far. In his current contract, he earns £110,000 per week. However, there has been no news whether his wages will be increased or not, or will they remain the same.
It is likely that Chelsea will increase his stay at Stamford Bridge till 2022. The report has also stated that he is ready to accept the new contract offer. While talks about this new contract could be accelerated in the coming days as well. Both parties want to work with each other.
The Brazilian has proved to be an excellent piece of business by Marina Granovskaia. Frank Lampard will be hoping that he can still maintain his lofty standards and be the linchpin at the back for the club.
What’s next for Chelsea’s defense?
Both Antonio Rudiger and Fikayo Tomori don’t seem to be a part of Lampard’s plans at the club. While Kurt Zouma is like a player reborn this season. Thiago Silva won’t be at Stamford Bridge for long, they have to already start planning for the future.
Jerome Boateng has been linked with a free transfer from Bayern Munich. While some fans have even suggested that Chelsea should try to get their hands on Sergio Ramos, who will be available for free next season.
However even these two are unlikely to be long-term solutions for the club. Atletico Madrid defender José Giménez could a good option. He is only 25 years old and previously he has spoken highly of Frank Lampard as well. There have been times when he has been linked with a move to the club.
Another defender in the La Liga could be a quality addition to the squad, Villarreal’s Pau Torres. Recently it was revealed that the Yellow Submarine are asking for a fee of $50 million for him. Perhaps Chelsea will need another Marina masterclass to secure his signature.
