Chelsea Transfer news: Hugo Ekitike joined Reims’ youth academy in 2013 before making his professional debut for the club in 2020. He played 19 league games for the club thus far, scoring eight goals in the process.
The 19-year-old attacker spent the second half of the 2020-21 season on loan at Danish club Vejle Boldklub, where he scored three goals in 11 appearances. Ekitike is also a part of France’s youth set-up, featuring twice for France’s U-20 team thus far.
Chelsea transfer news: Blues enter race to sign Reims’ Hugo Ekitike
According to reports, Chelsea have enquired with Ligue 1 club Reims about attacker Hugo Ekitike. The Blues contacted the French club in relation to signing Ekitike in the summer.
Ekitike has been in brilliant form for the French club this season, scoring eight goals in 17 Ligue 1 appearances. His performances caught the attention of top clubs across Europe, who have sent scouts to see him over the past few weeks.
However, the Grand Est-based side are demanding €40 million to let Ekitike leave and it remains to be seen whether the Blues will pay that sort of sum for the 19-year-old.
What will Hugo Ekitike bring to Chelsea?
Ekitike is a versatile attacker who is capable of playing anywhere across the forward line. His key strengths are his dribbling and finishing skills, along with having the vision to find his teammates in high goalscoring positions. He averaged 1.2 shots, 0.8 dribbles and 0.5 key passes per 90 in Ligue 1 this season. Apart from that, he also likes to get back to help his teammates in defence, averaging 0.9 tackles per 90 in the French top division.
Newcastle also showing interest in Hugo Ekitike
The Northeast-based club are amidst a relegation battle in the English Premier League this season. Manager Eddie Howe has signed Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier in recent weeks to strengthen his team’s bid for survival in the English top division.
He is now looking to further bolster his team’s attack by signing Hugo Ekitike. The Toons have reportedly offered Reims £25 million to sign the talented Frenchman. However, there is still some difference between the two teams’ valuation of the player, which they will look to resolve in the coming weeks.
Apart from Ekitike, Dominic Solanke, Divock Origi and Patrik Schick are the other attackers linked with the Toons recently.
Chelsea are currently third in the English top division, 13 points behind leaders Manchester City. They will next play Brighton away before hosting Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on January 23.
Meanwhile, Reims are currently 12th in the Ligue 1 table with 24 points in 21 games. They will play Paris Saint-Germain in the league before facing Bastia in the French Cup on January 27.
