According to Chelsea’s former scout Piet de Visser, the London-based club scouted Brazilian winger Antony and could have signed him from Sao Paulo.

In an interview with Voetbal Primeur, de Visser said, “Together with Hans van der Zee (Ajax’s former chief scout), we saw him for the first time at Brazil’s youth ranks and we were both charmed by him.”

Piet de Visser admitted that Chelsea wanted the winger to spend some time in Ajax and develop further. They would have then signed the winger from Ajax.

After joining Ajax, Antony played under Dutch coach Erik Ten Hag. In his two-year stay at the club, Antony won back-to-back league campaigns and was a big part of Ajax’s success.

Erik ten Hag then joined Manchester United ahead of the season. He soon identified Antony as his premium option on the right side of United and asked the board to sign him.

After a tough negotiation, United finally signed Antony for a reported fee of €95 million. After arriving at Old Trafford, Antony provided sudden impact and scored a goal in his Red Devils debut in a 3-1 win over league leaders Arsenal.
